Methodology

The data for the Index is sourced from Google Trends, which provides relative interest scores (scaled 0–100) for search terms over a specified time and region.
The data is then rescaled to make results comparable across sports, regions and time. It is also normalised so that each country's scores add up to 100 for an easier interpretation.
For regional and worldwide aggregates, the Index is calculated as the average of each country's Index weighted by the country's population.
To ensure having a large enough sample size, only countries with population >1M have been included. Some countries for which data quality was deemed insufficient have also been excluded.

Given the limitations in the data from Google Trends, the reliance on sampling and transformations, this index is meant to provide an approximation of interest in sports and should be interpreted as such.
